Virginia Coasters Chapter

Virginia Coasters

Local Chapter

The February campout was held at the RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads, Roanoke Rapids, NC. The interior roads are paved, and each site has a concrete pad. There is gravel in front of and behind the concrete pad. There is grass between each site and a picnic table. The recreation building was enclosed on one side and had plastic drop sheets for the other three sides.

Thursday and Friday we explored the area. In Weldon we saw the River Falls Park and up the road from the Park was the Riverside Mill Antique Mall. The refurbished cotton mill alone was worth the trip. Inside were vendors with antiques, crafts, flea-market wares, food items such as peanuts, and artisans selling paintings, pottery, and even Junkyard Art. We went south to Historic Halifax to learn the history of the area. The visitor center is new, and well designed. We first went into a theatre to watch a movie then exited into a museum. Before starting the walking tour we ate lunch at the only eatery in town, the King St. Deli. It was very good. Those that did the walking tour spent about 2 hours going through buildings learning about the era. They especially liked the printing press that printed one sheet at a time. Some of us went further south to Scotland Neck to the Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park to see the 1500 birds. The park includes an aviary for each continent. The walking path goes right through each of the aviaries. It was marvelous even on a chilly day. Thursday night we played Trivial Pursuit. Friday night after dinner, we had our chapter meeting and desert.

We woke Saturday to 1-2 inches of snow and still falling. The rest of the day was just lazy. Saturday night dinner was pot luck after which we played Charades. Most had never played before but everyone was a good sport.

Sunday the sun was out and the roads were dry. Most of the snow was gone. It turned out to be a great weekend. We missed those unable to be with us but hope to see them at the next campout.
